There are lamps that light a room, and then there are lamps that make a room. The Boyes sits firmly in the second category. Its ceramic base stacks two angled geometric forms — wide at the shoulder, tapered at the waist — glazed in a deep terracotta that shifts from amber to rust depending on the hour. It is the kind of object you buy for the shape and keep for the way it looks at dusk.
We put ours on a walnut sideboard, which is, as it turns out, exactly where it belongs. The warm glaze against dark wood grain, a linen drum shade diffusing soft light above — it reads as considered without trying. A brass socket detail keeps things from tipping too rustic.
It also happens to nail one of the dominant design moves coming out of Milan this season: sculptural ceramic in saturated, warm-toned color. Ahead of the curve without announcing it.
