We have a theory about nightstands: they’re the one piece of bedroom furniture that has to do everything — hold a lamp, a book, a glass of water — while looking like it’s doing nothing at all. The Paul McCobb Connoisseur manages this with considerable ease. Designed in 1954 and still in production for all the right reasons, it pairs a solid white marble top with light-stained American white oak drawers inside a solid brass frame. It is the kind of piece that looks better the less you do to it.
The caned shelf below is the detail we keep coming back to. It’s where the architecture softens — the natural counterpoint McCobb clearly intended, and a useful one. Stack a couple of books there, leave it mostly empty, it works either way.
This nightstand disappears into a bedroom in the best possible sense. Linen bedding, a swing-arm sconce, a headboard in undyed fabric — it settles in next to almost anything and makes everything around it look more deliberate.
